Simple Sandals II

Here is another sandal idea I came up with when I needed to make some for a children's Christmas pageant. This one is a little more elaborate than Sandals I. We use them for skits and plays that don't require much physical activity.

These sandals will hold up for some time, especially if you use thick vinyl (the kind used for upholstery). If making them for adults they should however, be worn by people who do not have to be physically active. In other words, they will hold up better when used only to walk around not running or jumping. **Not recommended for the kids since they will be playing outside at the Village Playground.

Since the original design was for kids, you will have to adjust all measurements for larger sizes. If you have the time and are creative perhaps you can alter this design. If so, let me know what you came up with.

You will need:

WARNING! Please make a prototype and test before engaging in mass production. Even for children sizes I had to make a few adjustments. But they do hold up and look very nice.

  STEP 1
  a. b. c.

a. Start with a pair of Flip-Flops.

b. Pull down and cut off the strap plugs.

c. Remove the straps.

STEP 2
  a. b. c. d. e. f.

a. Cut the felt board in half (use the entire sheet for larger than size 7)

b. Place slipper on top center of felt piece and trace over with light colored pencil

c.&d. [Front Flaps] - Measure 2 1/2 " from top on both sides and make a straight line from edge of felt to slipper. Then measure 1 1/2" from that line and make another line on both sides.

e. [Middle Flaps] - Measure 1 1/2" (1" for adult sizes 8 and up) from second line on both sides and make another line ). Then measure another 1 1/2" from that line to create forth line on both sides.

f. [Back Flap] - Measure 3 1/2'' (*NOT 4" as in photo) from edge and make a line from heel of slipper to bottom edge of felt. Measure 2" (*NOT 1 1/2" as in photo) from that line and make another line. [Length of flap should be longer (at least 3 inches) for larger sizes]

* Back heel is more comfortable if made wider.

STEP 3
  a. b. c. d. e. f.

a. Felt board should look like this

b. Carefully cut around the markings. Should look like this.

c.&d. Mark 1/2" from edge and punch a dark colored eyelet.

e. Do the same for all 4 side flaps, but punch two eyelets on the back heel flap. (Round off corners if desired)

f. Glue the Slipper to the felt piece. I use Fabri-Tac, but you may want to use a stronger glue here (Rubber Cement works good too).

STEP 4
  a. b. c. d. e. f.

a. Start by threading the lace in through the front two flaps (make sure both sides are even).

b. Criss-cross the lace and carry both ends behind the heel.

c. Criss-cross again and thread through both heel flap eyelets.

d. bring each side back to the front and thread through middle flaps.

e. Criss-cross again and tie in front.
