Simple Marketplace Canopy

**NOTE**    Dowels are 36" in most craft stores. Your local Hardware store may carry longer sizes. If you cannot find one or securely attach two pieces you can make a shorter canopy by cutting the fabric 35" in width instead of 45". You can also use broom sticks, metal rods or even 3/4" PVC pipes however, you will need to extend fabric another 4 inches in width and sew 2 1/2" hems in order to fit the wider rods.

1. Begin with a 45" by 24 or 26" piece of fabric (You may shorten or lengthen as desired)** & 2 7/16" D dowels.

2. Measure 6 1/2" inches from edge (right side up)

3. Fold over and measure 1" from fold, mark  & secure with pins. Sew  hem exactly 1" from fold (dowel needs to fit in loosely).

5. Flip over fabric. You have created your first hem and the overhang part of the canopy.

6. With right side still up fold entire piece in half, then a second and a third time.

7. Your folded fabric will look like this. This is the underside of the canopy.

(I didn't do this step, but I recommend you do.) Before proceeding to Step #8 you may want to iron the hem away from the overhang edge. This way you will be more careful not to cut the hem  when cutting the scallops.

8. Cut a scallop shape out of cardboard the width of the folded piece to use as template. Place template just below the 1st hem (remember, you should now be seeing the underside of the canopy). Start cutting out the shape just about 1/2 inch from hem, being careful not to cut the hem.

9. Unfold fabric and continue to work on underside. Fold 1" from other edge and sew to form 2nd Hem.

10. Your canopy should look something like this.

11. Insert dowels into 1st and 2nd hems. Hang from ceiling with fishing wire. Hang back part of canopy a little higher than the front (scalloped) part.
